El creciente uso de teléfonos celulares es el responsable de la desaparición de las abejas y del colapso de sus panales, según investigadores de la universidad de Chandigarh en Punjab, India. Los expertos han señalado que las ondas de los teléfonos móviles probablemente interfieren con los sensores de navegación de las abejas.
A inicios de año, pusieron en marcha un experimento controlado a través del cual compraron el comportamiento y la productividad de las abejas en dos panales, uno con dos teléfonos celulares instalados que eran encendidos dos veces al día, quince minutos por vez, durante tres meses. El otro panal tenía dos teléfonos falsos.
Después de tres meses los investigadores registraron una dramática disminución en el tamaño del panal en la que estaban los celulares reales, menos reproducción e inclusive menos miel. También se redujo el número de abejas obreras.
Ved Prakash Sharma and Neelima Kumar, los autores del reporte, publicado en el Current Science, escribieron que el incremento en el uso de aparatos electrónicos ha ocasionado la electro-contaminación del ambiente y que el comportamiento de las abejas y su biología se ha visto afectada por el “electro-smog”, teniendo en cuenta que estos insectos tienen magnetita en sus organismos, lo que les ayuda en su orientación.
